Back to Work Fall 2009 – Update your staples for Fall

There are some things a wardrobe is in need of to be complete. Some of these are items that were trendy that have turned into staples, or updated classics.

Fall 2009 is influenced by bikers and 80’s fashion, so think anywhere from studded black on black to neon.

And while the 80’s have influenced designers this season, the silhouettes are updated. The shoulders are emphasised but not big or linebackeresque. The jackets are slimmer not boxy.

This is what the torontoShopoholic is looking for Fall 2009.

Skinny Jeans:

I hate to say it but this trend isn’t going anywhere and if you have been trying to avoid them it’s time to bite the bullet and find a pair that work for you.

Granted these don’t instantly work on all body types so you will have to try on a bunch to get a great fit. Want a hint? If you are fuller through the hip and thighs try a higher waisted version, it will be more flattering.

Still thinking skinny isn’t for you? You can’t go wrong with a mid rise straight or wide leg jean. It may not be trendy but you will look fab.

Leggings:

Big last season and also not going anywhere are leggings. With all the 80’s inspired fashion on the runway, the big sweater leggings combo is back with a vengeance.

But these aren’t any old stir-up pants that you rocked back in the day; these are richly hued and luxurious in comparison. Try the Knit Chelsea from Joe's Jeans or these from Gap . If you are feeling extra edgy go for leather!

Trench:

The ultimate fall classic coat is pretty much everywhere this fall. With Burberry opening at Yorkdale and soon on Bloor you can get the ultimate Trench. But you don’t really need to spend a fortune. Even the Gap has a great trench in their line up. Do you?

Sweater:

Everyone has sweaters, but do you have the right sweater in your wardrobe to pair with say Skinny jeans or leggings.

To balance out the slim leg, go for a fuller silhouette on top. Try something like the belted cardigan. If you are a slave to your mid rise straight leg jeans try this textured ¾ sleeved sweater.

Tall Boots:

Boots are essential especially if you are going with the skinny jean or legging. What is great is that they don’t have to hide under a pant leg! Go for flats for day and heels for night!

Bag:

Accessories are great because you can play with trend without going into the deep end.

A great bag finishes an outfit and It’s the best accessory because it mixes form with function.

Try a pop of colour, even neon or go for studs. If you prefer canvas remember you don’t have to sacrifice style.

If you are going back to school consider a smaller back pack especially good if you are a smaller person!). Check out this North Face bag. It doesn’t break the bank and it wouldn’t be considered luggage or a separate body part.

Trends from fall 2009 that you should avoid

Another throw back to the 80’s pleated tapered pants. These are even harder to pull off than skinny jeans, and if you are in any way pear shaped it will make you look like an ice cream cone!
