Back to School - getting you and your kids ready!

Kids are back to school in the next weeks and you might have already done a lot of your back to school shopping. But if you were like me I liked to see what was going on, what was cool and how I could be a bit different before I did my back to school shopping.

Remember that for the first month kids are more likely to be getting a little bit more use of their summer duds rather than sporting their new fall gear.

Layering is important as it is already starting to be cooler in the mornings and evenings, but you still have the summer heat through the day.

Stock up on long sleeved tees that can be used as a light top layer for now and a great layer under cardigans, vests or tees for winter.

Many stores are winding down their summer sales but you can still find all sorts of deals. Stock up on these sale items for next year or on some cheap staples to get you through the Indian summer.

If your child gets attached to favourite pieces of clothing buy one in the next size up so that this look will last you all year!

Shoes are another stock up item as you will likely need one pair for inside the school and one pair for outside the school. Stock up on runners, waterproof boots and skip the Uggs.

Why? Uggs don’t stand up to wet weather so if your kid is mucking through the slush they are likely to have very wet toes.

A new back-pack might also be in order. Pick something that suits the size of your kid.

The North Face and Mountain Coop have nice smaller options for women and children. Some styles are quite reasonable at only $30. Don’t worry there are boyish colours too.

If you are worried that a smaller backpack won’t accommodate all those textbooks here’s a tip – ask your child’s teacher for the homework list in advance.

Scan or photocopy as far in advance as you can. This way your child can carry only the homework pages needed and not the whole textbook all the time!

Maybe Teacher would be up for providing an electronic copy for you so that you can stay aware of your child’s homework requirements.

Start packing lunches in reusable baggies. Some amazing crafts people on Etsy have some really great environmentally friendly options to tote lunches.

Don’t foget your little baby and toddler at this stage too. They might not be growing out of clothes as fast these days but little ones are more aware of the temperature change!

Make sure you have long sleeved onsies and lap tees for layering and lots of socks. Also might be time to spring for a jacket that can be used in the upcoming months. Joe Fresh has some great options and you have to worry less about shrinkage with outerwear.

Happy Fall 2009 Everyone!
