There seems to be a Toronto sports store for every sport out there.
Between sports stores that try to do it all, to specialty niche shops
that cater to just goalies or ski bums or cyclists there definitely is
quite the variety across the city.
There are even resale shops for used skates and bikes or huge ski swaps
that cater to those of us who are more frugal or just testing out a new
sport.
Toronto Sports Store: One Stop Shops
Most of us are most familiar with the major sporting goods chains, the
stores that attempt to do it all and have a wide variety of sports
gear. Even still these one stop shops still only take on a fraction of
the sports out there at a time.
Sporting Life -
There are two stores at Yonge & Eglinton, the best known at the
top end of the neighbourood has clothing and sports gear for skiers,
boarders, tennis and badminton players. The smaller store caters to
board sports and bikes.
National Sports -
Yonge & Sheppard - This sports retailer has a larger presence
in the GTA and outside of Toronto but my husband loves this store
because of its discounts. You can always find big names for less than
retail. Catering to major sports like hockey, golf, basket ball and
baseball. Spokes & Sport
- Avenue Road - This shop started out as a bicycle specialty store but
has branched off into team sports as well. You can find hockey,
baseball, soccer, curling and lacrosse gear too.
Mountain Equipment Co-op
- King West - MEC
is for outdoor adventure types looking for kayaks, canoes,
mountain climbing and hiking gear. The store is an adventure itself to
shop.
You can also shop at many of the national chains like Sport Check,
Atmosphere, and Foot Locker which are found at the Eaton Center and
neighbourhoods like Leaside (the business park) or Queen West.
Toronto Sports Store: Specialty Stores
These are the boutiques in the sports world that cater just to hockey
or cycling or skiing. These shops are more likely to have a used
selection of gear and more hard to find brands.
Golf Town -
King West & Leaside - This Toronto sports store is as the name suggests all about Golf.
Toronto Hockey Repair
& Goalie Heaven Bloor West (Roncesvalles &
Lansdowne) -
4000 sq feet dedicated to just hockey nothing else. Plus there is a
Goalie specialty shop next door.
Just Hockey Source for
Sports - on Steeles or Don Mills -
another hockey only shop with two locations in North Toronto.
Cyclepath -
Toronto is not lacking for bicycle shops. Some only carry one brand
others are for novices or leisure bikers while still others cater to
serious bikers only. Cyclepath (Davisville) is just one of many; others
include Trek (Davisville), Helo Velo (Carlaw), Set Me Free &
West Side Cycle (both Roncesvales) to name a few.
L&M Taylor Soccer
- Davisville - this shop is small but it specializes in soccer. If you
are looking for soccer gear In2Sports is the soccer superstore and is
found north of the city in Vaughan. In2Sports is also on of the only
places in Ontario where you can find the Canadian National Soccer Team
collection form Umbro.
Board Sports
- Davisville - this shop is everything boards; skateboards, snowboards,
windsurfing, stand up paddle, kite and wake boards. There is a second
location in the village at Blue Mountain.
Watersports
- Davisville - one of the few dive shops in the city. Find gear and how
to get certified.
Ron Sloan & The
Merchant of Tennis - Leaside - two tennis specialty shops
in Leaside. Ron Sloan is more about the gear and is a place where you
can get your raquet restrung, whereas the Merchant of Tennis has
apparel as well.
Energia Athletics - Danforth - running specialty & fitness
Toronto sports store in front of the Energia fitness facility. Other gear includes yoga mats
and kettleballs.
Lululemon -
Yonge & Eglinton + Toronto malls - The shop for yoga in the
city but by far not the only place to shop. Many small yoga centers
also sell mats and clothing.
New Balance
- Yonge & St. Clair and Bloor West Village - running gear,
clothing and shoes.
Toronto Sports Stores: Resale & Swaps
Men seem to be more interested in high performance clothing for sports.
There is some selection at sporting goods stores but these shops offer
even more selection.
Playitagain Sports -
Etobicoke & Scarborogh - Probably the best known for resale
sports equipment but no location in Toronto proper.
Sport Swap -
This Leaside shop just moved to new digs, still on South Bayview. They
cater to bikes, skis, boards and offer service for this equipment too.
Newsons -
Dundas & Jane - in the WAY west end you will find this family
owned since 1931 bike and skate exchange shop. You can find a bit more
that just hockey and bike equipment but these are the most popular
items.
Toronto Ski Snowboard
& Travel Show - Better Living Center Exhibition
Place - This show hosts Canada's largest ski and board swap annually in
October.
Keep in mind that some of the sport shops mentioned in above categories also
carrt used sports equipment, particularly Toronto Hockey
Repair. Also
MEC hosts gear swaps at their stores so look to their stores and
website's member services for more details.
