Shop your Closet & tips to make better
wardrobe choices
There
are a number of reasons why you could have decided to shop your
closet.
Whether you are on a spending hiatus, or are looking to recycle your
clothing, or just planning future additions to your wardrobe being able
to shop in your own closet effectively is a skill.
It seems that everyone is telling you to shop your closet these days.
There are books on the subject, day time talk shows dedicate
time and bring in their experts to show you how.
It is the sign of the times, more for our friends to the
south because of their fragile economy than us Canadians but
we are constantly bombarded by US programming.
Whatever the case most of us don't have the disposable income to ignore
our past purchase outright and start from scratch every day, so
starting in your closet first and likely what you have to wear in your
closet is a great way to feel good about yourself every day.
Where
to Start
Ever wonder why you have nothing to wear yet have a closet full of

clothing?
Are you distracted by all the stuff in your closet you don't actually
like anymore, doesn't fit and haven't worn in ages?
Start by preparing your closet so that it is a place you want to shop.
Go through a
recycle
clothing exercise. Purge the things that make you not want to
shop your closet.
Make your closet easy to shop like a well curated boutique. There may
be less selection but what is there is pure gold.
Browse and try on outfits
Now that your closet is somewhere that you would like to shop start
browsing and building outfits.
Make note of your favourite pairings. There are a few ways you can
remember your best outfits.
- take a picture of yourself in the outfits
& create a look book
- organize your closet by outfits instead of
colour, pairing alternative tops and bottoms close by the main outfit
combo.
Also make note of holes in your wardrobe. Did you over purge? Is there
something you should keep in your closet? Or do you need to go shopping
for specific items?
Having a list of selected items to add to your wardrobe will keep your
spending in check if you have having issues with self control. Be sure
to note what outfits you are adding to and what colours will work best.
Accessorize!
An easy way to add a unique spin on the same outfit is with shoes and
accessories.
One day you can keep an outfit simple with boots and delicate jewelery
whereas a few days later the same outfit can be transformed with
colourful pumps or bold statement jewelery.
Make sure however that your accessories are as easy to select as your
outfits. Keep your overflowing jewelery box clutter free.
Also if you are looking to make inexpensive additions to your wardrobe
this is usually easier to do with accessories which tend to less
expensive than outfits themselves. Of course as long as you are staying
away from Louis Vuitton!!
