Baby Layette Guide
Most baby layette (clothing) companies will provide you with a list of what they think you need and how many. Here here is my layette guide of what I can't live without!
OnsiesMy daughter wears at least one everyday. I have approx 5 short sleeved and almost as many long sleeved onsies for her to wear. The short sleeved version is great as an undershirt and as the weather warms up as a t-shirt! Babies little backs are better kept warm with a onsie tucked into pants while the fancy shirt goes over top. The long sleeved version is just great with pants, or under a jumper or overalls. It is recommended to have approximately 6-8 onsies to save on laundry time.
Pants with feetEveryone is aware that babies pajamas are usually sold with feet, but few companies sell their little pants with feet also. Kushies sells elastic waist pants with feet in pink, yellow, green & blue and they go up to 6 mo. I find these pants indispensable because socks get kicked off easily!
Hats Hats are a must have especially in the early weeks when baby is wearing a hat constantly. Have a few colours and sizes on hand to accommodate baby's rapid growth! I found that I have outdoor hats or touques and indoor hats, although as the weather gets warmer, the little cotton hats are transitioning to outdoor hats. 2 to 3 hats in your babies current size should be sufficient.
Sleep Sacks & Swaddle wraps These have been indispensable at bed time. We only used our swaddle for the first three weeks as our daughter broke out of it, she preferred to sleep sprawled all over. Sleep sacks however we have continued to use. I prefer the ones with sleeves, but but these are hard to find in Canada, however just recently saw that Piccolo Bambino has a long sleeved version selling at Babies R US. We have been using a long sleeved sleep sack from Carters and have found that a warm baby sleeps longer! Try and have 2 - 3 sleep sacks, even have different weights for the changing seasons.
Of course you will want a well rounded wardrobe for your bundle of joy. Remember you will get layette as gifts, I don't think that we have bought 1/10th of our daughters wardrobe. Also consider how often you want to do laundry. If you are ok with doing laundry every day you can get away with fewer clothes. Brands that I would recommend are Carters as they are true to baby's size at any given stage & they make sleep sacks with sleeves, Kushies because they make pants with feet, Pekkle because they make super cute sleepers and Joe Fresh because you can't go wrong with the price point. Also consider looking at second hand stores. Most baby clothes do not get worn out, and you can get onsies for $2 at our local Once upon a Child.
