Lake Huron Travel Come with me to Saugeen Shores
Lake Huron Travel spots are numerous. All along the shores of this Great Lake there are cottage towns for you to sample. My favourite is Southampton. Part of Saugeen Shores, which amalgamated Southampton, Port Eglin and the township in between the two, the area is known for some of the BEST sunsets in the world. My family has been cottaging in Southampton since before I was born and we still make the three hour trek from Toronto multiple times a summer.
More than just a day trip (although it can be done!) stay for a long weekend or the week. Hang out on the beautiful dune beaches, take a trip over to Chantry Island or play tennis at the Southampton Tennis club. Southampton is definitely one of my favourite places on earth!
Although there are plenty of restaurants in Southampton the one place we keep going back to is Gerry's Fries. Originally on the beach in Port Elgin, Gerry's moved to Southampton long enough ago that I can't remember when! Why do I go there? Well the fresh cut fries of course but the milk shakes are fantastic too! Also try the Offshore Bakery, the Walker House, Armand's and the Elk & Finch for great eats!
Lake Huron travel spots are great if you are into boating and fishing. Check out the Southampton and Port Elgin Harbors first! Southampton's harbor is found along the Saugeen river and has a few slips for sailing and fishing boats. Port Elgin is a major harbor for power boats and large sail boats alike.
As a kid we used to take a small fishing boat across from the beach to Chantry Island to see the ruins of the Chantry Lighthouse. Now you can take organized tours. Other things to keep you busy? Get a Southampton Tennis Club membership. Extremely reasonable summer family membership will have your kids yelling OVERHAND and UNDERHAND in no time. Shopping the main streets in both Southampton and Port Elgin has gotten better over the years. Plus check out the flea market on the beach in Port Elgin on Wednesdays and the Southampton Craft Sale on the first Thrusday in July annually. Southampton is like a second home to me - I know you will fall in love with Saugeen Shores too! No time to visit the beach because you are shopping?
