How to Build a Wardrobe

How to build a wardrobe is something I have given alot of thought.

And I am still not sure I have it exactly right.

But a wardrobe really is a work in process isn't it. Otherwise you would only buy things when they wear out.

And who does that?

This is the torontoShopoholics wardrobe checklist.

The how to build a wardrobe list of all the wardrobe essentials you need to fill your closet with the best items possible.

Jeans

Long gone are the days when jeans were relegated to the back of your closet until the weekend. They are actually are something you should pay close attention to when figuring out how to build a wardrobe.

This basic can be pulled out for nights on the town and work days if done right.

Depending on your lifestyle you may own a closet full of jeans or just one pair.

Skinny, boot cut, wide legged, I have owned them all!

My recommendation stick to a dark uniform wash and get one wider legged jean and one straight leg for versatility in your look.

Trousers

Ok so you can't wear jeans everyday.

You need at least one suit in your closet and these come with trousers.

Get a pair with no pleats please. Flat front are modern and most flattering.

Try and have one black pant and one lighter pant (usually tan/khaki) in circulation.

I will say it again a suit is a great way to add pants to your wardrobe and you get an instant coordinated outfit, a no brainer.

White Tees

I think I might wear a white t-shirt everyday. Whether it be under a sweater as a layered item or front and center.

You can get them in other colours if you want.

Stick with a scoop or v-neck to elongate your neckline and flatter your chest.

Crew necks are harder to wear unless used solely as an undershirt.

You should also have a white button down shirt. Look for something tailored to fit a woman's body - stay away from the mens department!

Skirts

As a Canadian I don't wear skirts enough and I tend to save them for summer.

But really a wool skirt can be a classy, sexy and warm option to have in your closet.

Try a knee length straight skirt or even a pencil skirt.

If you are really thinking get the skirt that goes with the suit you bought. Now you have 2 easy outfits and even more when you mix and match with your basics!

Dresses

At the very least there are three dresses you should own. The day dress, the special occasion dress and your very own LBD (little black dress).

My all time favourite day dress is the wrap dress. Ultra flattering and a great way to have fun with pattern and colour.

Your LBD should be classic and uber flattering. Think of something that can take you from a work event, a funeral and even cocktails. Wow that is multi-tasking.

Jackets

Jackets are sometimes overlooked when people contemplate how to build a wardrobe.

But blazers are a great way to finish off an outfit.

They create definition in the waist and hide imperfections at the same time.

Look at yourself in the mirror, how much better does that outfit look now that you have on the jacket?

If you by one blazer make it part of a suit that way it is multipurpose.

But make sure you like it enough to wear it with jeans as well as the trousers.

A leather jacket is a great way to add something a little edgier to your wardrobe and if it is a light enough weight it can double as a blazer for work.

For a winter coat before anything else get a knee length wool coat. Single breasted is generally more flattering.

Try something other than black for a change. Colour is fun!

And please please please cut the strings that hold the kick pleat shut.

Lingerie

Don't forget lingerie when you are brainstorming on how to build a wardrobe.

I say build your wardrobe from the inside layer up.

A great fitting bra is going to make a world of difference not only how you look in the rest of your wardrobe essentials but how you feel as well.

Shoes

Shoes really can make or break an outfit.

Comfort shouldn't take a backseat to style but there are options other than a flat black rubber soled number.

Shoes can add pizazz, a pop of colour and set the tone.

If you are like me you own more pairs than you need, but start with a great pair of pumps, some sensible flats, a sporty shoe and a pair of boots.

Wow that is four pairs already!

How to Build a Wardrobe Final Thoughts

Buy things that make you feel confident.

The majority of your pieces should be classics that don't go out of style next season.

That doesn't mean stay away from trendy items, just make sure that trends don't rule your wardrobe otherwise you will have to rebuild it yearly.

Your bank account might yell at you for that. And your husband.

Go through your closet to do inventory annually. Get rid of stuff that is worn out and items you do not wear.
