American Apparel Canada shopping for the rest of Us

Always wondered what the fuss was all about regarding American Apparel Canada? Me too!

Ok yes they make their T-shirts in downtown LA providing fair wages to their workers, which is commendable for the rag trade.

But really don’t they just sell T-shirts?

So after seeing another one of their tees in a magazine, I thought maybe I should really check out American Apparel in Toronto.

American Apparel Toronto College Street

I had always been a bit off put by the 80’s unitards and liquid leggings. I just wasn’t as downtown as the mannequins suggested I needed to be to shop at this store. I thought it might get better inside.

I was wrong, the average age of those working and shopping in American Apparel stores was about 17 (ok maybe 22), and yes I wasn’t hip enough.

Plus the racks upon racks of t-shirts, that quite frankly reminded me of men’s undershirts, had more a flea market vendor feel rather than an international chain.

I asked the girl where the children’s clothes were as I had made it to the back of the store and had seen nothing. Maybe this store didn’t carry babies and kids? No she tells me its right at the front. Right because no one my age would wander through this far I think. I left without buying anything.

I really did want to see what all the fuss was about though; I mean these t-shirts are constantly featured in Vouge and InStyle and on pretty much every celebrity. I decide to check out the online store.

What a difference! The online store is easy to shop. There are reviews of products so I don’t get caught trying the wrong thing.

I find out that I should order a size up in the baby clothes as the elastic on the pants is tight and they shrink. I find the style of t-shirt to try. It promises to be super soft and effortless.

I am shopping in Canadian dollars and by signing up for the newsletter I get 15% off! AND they are actually shipping the merchandise from Canada not the US so my order won’t be caught up at the border and I didn’t have to factor in duties.

All in all I am impressed with the online store. Plus my order came in and I love what I got.

The baby clothes are cool not cutesy, but I am not sure I would order them again. It is a better deal to buy from Joe Fresh and I am a sucker for a cute pattern or appliqué any day!

The t-shirt for me is super soft and cozy, though I am hoping the length will shrink a bit in the wash.

All in all I am not American Apparel Canada's target customer; they are providing a shopping experience for more the downtown hipster or the Much Music crowd. But if I feel the need I will shop online for another tri blend deep v tee.

You can find American Apparel Canada at Yonge & Eglinton, Yonge Dundas Square, College Street, Queen Street, Sherway Gardens and in the underground along Bloor
